we want to install a dog flap but the bottom of the upvc door has moulded bevels just in the wrong place! can they be cut through and a flap put in anyway, or do i need to replace the door first? has anyone else done this? we don't particularly want leaks or draughts!

DIY doc, i'm not bthered about the aesthetics of the door, and i am sure my pets are capable of lifting their paws an inch or 2, although i do occasionally have disabled dogs. i did expect to leave the BOTTOM frame intact and just cut a hole for the dog door. i may be blonde but...

as it happens i do know about upvc doors, if you have a panel at the bottom , it can be taken out by removing the plastic strips that hold it in on the in-side,
but the problem that i can see is , that the dog flap should be the same size and thickness as the panel you removed , you just have to put the flap panel in and then replace the plastic strips to hold the new panel in.
if you are making the flap your self use the panel that will be removed as a template, cutting the hole for the flap in it leaving enough space so that the panel can be refitted back into the door , with the plastic strips .
hope this is of use to you and when are you going to join the group i have started up . it is a help group for people with PC problems just click on my headers in 360 and it will take you there or click on this link

The possibility of air flow will be a likelyhood no matter, as might water intrusion unless you dam the exterior somehow.
The fact that "The Wrong place" is an issue you'll have to deal with in modifying a door for a pet. The issue will be that the bevel will end on one side, and begin on the opposing side of the flap. Or if it's molded in panels, decorative, you might have to accept that the design of the door has to be modified/interrupted to include a pet door.
More important however is the likelyhood that the door is hollow core, meaning it's frame is at it's perimeter, and you'd probably have to cut/trim/fit framework to install the dog door...similar to cutting through drywall to add an access door for humans. That might equate to some loss of aesthetics in the main body/facing of the door on both sides. If in fact that's the case, you might be able to leave the BOTTOM frame intact, and allow that the pet will have to lift a foot 2 inches for egress and ingress.
DRAFT can be lessened in the type of dog door you choose, but perhaps not totally eliminated. You could look into any type that has overlapping FLAPS of some vinyl type material, such as is used in commercial establishments where an area is refrigerated, adjacent to one that isn't.
I'd not have one, but I get it. I'd also do as much homework as possible, not only for the "Door" and its qualities/properties, but what The Main door substance might allow in the installation of any pet passage way.

The moulded door panel can be easily changed to a flat panel. The panel is held in by beads that clip in after the panel is fitted, and the beads can be removed using a 1 inch paint scraper. Buy a flat panel from any pvc installation co. take your panel out, measure the size, and cut the new one to the same size.
Before you fit the new panel, use the cutting guide that comes with the dog flap, and mark on the new panel where to cut......Remember tho, leave a 30mm space at the bottom of the panel to allow enough area for the panel to sit in the frame
Cut the opening with a fine bladed jigsaw..

No problem.
You will need to be handy, or find a handy person with the self confidence to do it.
A wood filler (or other material that is structurally sound and the right thickness), the same thickness as the molding at the bottom of the door, needs to be added to the thinner portion of the door above the molding, so that the surface of the door around the frame of the flap will be flush all the way around.
The added strips can be attached on both sides of the door and bolted together sandwiching the door between them for extra strength.

I'm in the middle of trying to buy a house. One of the ones I went to look at had a cat flap in every single door in the house (yes, even the toilet and bathroom). It made me wonder who on earth lived there, cats or humans! But it answers your question. Yes, you can put a cat flap in the UPVC door. They'd sawn a chunk out of a panel and fitted the cat flap in exactly the same way you would do in a wooden door. I like the idea of using a stiletto heel to get the hole started though. Get rid of all your frustrations at the same time!
