I have a 2000 Chevy S10 with 99200 miles. The battery was replaced about a year ago. The transmission was replaced 9 months ago. The alternator is probably being replaced tomorrow. I'd say I've done a reasonable but not exceptional job of maintenance in the six years I've had it. There's a slow oil leak of undetermined origin and a small coolant leak. I keep an eye on both levels and add fluid as necessary. The gas gauge stops being accurate below half tank. It cranks longer when fuel is below half a tank.

The only positives in my mind are that it's paid off, it runs and you can't beat the cargo space.

All that to ask: what are chances that I can get another year out of it without paying for a major (over $200) repair?

You should get over 200,000 miles as long as you treat it nice, and NEVER over heat the engine.

ADDED:
You're going to need a new fuel pump soon.

Why not find and fix the coolant leak before it becomes a winter headache. You can't you slide in a new radiator for under $125.00 if that's where the leak is. When you do it replace the hoses. Keep an eye on the brakes so you won't have to replace the rotors.

the S10 engine should be good for 150K miles if the oil and filters have been changed on a regular basis. Your coolant leak my be due to a small crack in the head; which should be no problem as long as you keep the coolant full at the overflow resevoir.

Connect a test light to the small terminal on the starter.Turn the key to crank position. If it lights, the starter is bad if it doesn't then look back. The neutral start switch may be out of range.Try holding the key in crank position and move the selector through it's range. The ignition switch is adjustable and located on the top of the column. The key may not be turning it far enough.Check the crank fuse. And as always be certain the battery cables are tight and corrosion free.

It's a piece of junk, and your history - even though you consider it not excessive - confirms that fact. It may or may not last another minute, and I'd say chances that it lasts another year without major breakdowns are quite slim.

Do you see many Isuzus still going after 100,000 miles? Use that as a guide.
