Good question, and I have a good answer. There are people who don't care about much of anything except themselves these days. How did it happen? Bad parenting. Too much TV and too many video games and not enough time spent on learning and human or family values. I don't like it, but I don't obsess about it, because I can't do anything about anyone but me.
And by the way, using proper grammar is not being freaky.

Probably a combination of both schooling and laziness. Some people were never taught to care while others feel that it takes too much effort to always use proper grammar. I don't always use the best grammar, but I feel rather guilty when I don't. I've worked as a copy-editor, so I'm very particular about my writing. I do get made fun of for speaking properly (which does not make me a freak) and using big words, but oh well--I can't expect everyone to care as much as I do. Although it would be nice...

I share your dismay. Grammar rules do not exist to make life difficult for people; they exist to enable us to communicate with each other. Standards seem to be turned upside down so that the least articulate -- those whose speech is filled with "you know," and "like," and mangled tenses -- consider themselves the most "cool." While the fake worlds of TV and Hollywood may adore them temporarily, the real world will not offer them the same adulation. And you can bet that these language-slaughtering celebrities make sure their lawyers know how to use grammar correctly to draw up contracts.
I don't assume that a person is stupid just because he uses poor grammar and/or cannot spell. I usually do have to conclude that he may be lazy or rebellious or, at the very least, inattentive. The real tragedy in thinking that grammar is not important is that sloppy speech will tend to make others underestimate, and maybe even disregard, real ability.
Grammar is a tool as well as a speech "wardrobe." We are judged by what comes out of our mouths.
I can't answer your question because I have the same one.

Easy question.
It is an age of convenience and speed.
Which is easier?
How are you doing today? I've had a great day. My family and I went to the beach and had a wonderful time. Although my sister got stung by a jellyfish. She's doing fine now; it just scared her a little.
OR
sup? me, i went 2 da beach was fun. sis stung by a jellyfish but she ok.
People -- especially youth -- tend to have hectic lives. They go to school, church, and work, and yet they still want to be able to have a social life outside of all of that.
Time is limited when you have 8 hours at school, 5 more at work, and homework to do. And you still don't get the weekends off because you're expected to work double shifts and attend both the morning and evening services at church.
So during the times that you DO get to see your friends, you want to say as much as you can in as little time (or space if online) as possible.
Text messages are limited to 160 characters per message.
It's not necessarily because of poor schooling...
I have friends that talk like my second example above. They aren't ignorant of any grammar rules. They could go back and correct it properly if they wanted to.
It's not necessarily because of laziness...
Many typos and missing punctuation marks or incorrect words are put there on purpose. If the typist tried to slow down to correct every little thing, it'd take me twice as long to receive their messages, and we'd only get to talk about half of what we would otherwise.
I type as properly as I can even in Instant Messages, but I have decent dexterity ,good hand-eye coordination, and a good understanding of the language. Not everyone does.
=-)

Sadly, they don't know the difference anymore, nor do they care-look at the attitude of your first answerer. And it has become socially acceptable for people to converse like the answerer below. Apparently, laziness is prevalent in society these days as well.
But I do think that the education system is failing too. Most teachers these days can't speak or write properly so how can we expect that they'll TEACH anyone properly? It's perplexing to me as well.

Um...you really should have used an apostrophe in "dont" and a hyphen in "no one." You also really should have had a comma after the word "schooling" the first time that you used it.
I'm not trying to be snarky. But is it a case of your not knowing, or did you simply not care?

Because the schools do not teach it; being content to turn out ignorance. As long as they are PC it is OK.
