It is a very bad idea. It is an invitation for plagiarism. No reputable publisher will touch a book that has been published online. It is too much trouble for them to sort out the true ownership. Someone in China could copy your story and sell it. Can you go after them? A copyright is only as good as the lawyer you hire to defend it. and it would end up costing you more than it was worth to defend a copyright. Also many of these sites that allow you to post stories have fine print stating they are the owners of anything posted on their sites. You are giving your work away.

The answer is to find a face to face writers group. They have them at stores like Borders and Barnes and Noble and in libraries. You can also sign up for a community college or adult ed course. Or you can ask a teacher for mentoring advice.

The last thing you want to do is post online. What are the benefits? Some total strangers read your work and judge it? You have no idea if they are even qualified to do so. It is just dumb. The best way to protect yourself from the thouands of plagiarists out there is just not to post anything online. And these sites who say they have plagiarism protection are a total joke. I can copy and steal any file I want just by backdating the date on my computer and burning a copy. Your copyright wouldn't stand up in court. It would look like YOU stole it from ME.

I lost a great story that way. I posted it on a friend's site as a favor. A couple months later, another friend wrote me to say "Persi you gotta read this great story!" I opened the file and damn if it wasn't MY story with another name on it. The only thing I could do was get the site shut down - the guy still had my story. Not a thing I could do. It was lost. I have since closed down my website and refuse to post anything here despite many requests. Do not give your work away. You work too hard on it. Pax- C
