If I drove within one hour I'd be at Busch Gardens, Wet & Wild, Clearwater, and a host of other beaches in the area, including the sponge docks, bird sanctuaries, good places to fish, great hotels and places to dine, outdoor and indoor music (where musicians frequent), after work drinking holes, lots of places to shop, miniature golf and golf courses, water sports like water skiing or swimming, you can watch mermaids, be in a pirate parade, have your future told, ride a boat, see a movie, gorge yourself with superb bakery items, ride yiour motorbike, hike, visit a zoo or two, see a play, hear a chorus, watch the boat races, visit the renaissance festival, the jazz festival, buy plants and home made items, watch the beautiful sunsets on the beach, etc. etc....and then go to Orlando....which is a few hours away.

What I would give to be in Silicon Valley again!
If you drive 1 hour from my house in any direction you will see sand and cactus... oh and maybe a rattle snake.
I hate the desert!
Now if I drive 1 1/2 hours west I'd be in Lancaster.
2 hours north Bakersfield (oh yay... sarcasim?)
2 1/2 hours south San Bernardino (traffic depending!)
3 hours east you get Bishop....
Sigh... if it wernt for the internet.... I'd shoot myself!
