Long before there was an English the Greeks wrote of Lycans. In the descriptions of the writings the Lycan was a nude man running naked through the streets tearing at anyone he met with his bare teeth. Some of the stories mention madness--as in lunacy--and others what we call rabies in our present times and language.

Therefore, like in many facts brought down through the ages, the difference is a description and a translation. Though both still use the Moon as a supposed trigger.

Though there are some few, called the pure of heart.

Yes those, so humble, knelt in prayer each night.
Yet still the poisoned, wolfbane flowers bloomed,
and the gibbous moon, blazes, full and bright.
It screams for shapeshift, then to stalking doomed.

Come lycanthropes all, play your horrid part.

Eyes all gone crimson, whites of ruptured veins.

Werewolves and lycanthropes are the same mythological beings. But Lycanthropy is the technical term for shapeshifting into a werewolf. There isn't a difference between the two, other than one is an "official" term, while the other is the common term. Clinical Lycanthropy is a mental illness where the people who suffer from it often believe they can transform into a werewolf, and end up acting like a werewolf [even though they are still in a human shape and form].

Also, a Lycan is a hollywood name for Werewolf. And modern day therianthropy has nothing to do with transforming into an animal... Wikipedia isn't the most reliable source, it's free for a reason. Anyone can edit the articles and thus a lot of the information can be wrong, misunderstood, and poorly written.

There is a major difference. The lycanthrope comes from Europe and the werewolf comes from Hollywood.

Let’s take one of each, both 17 years of age, both male:

The lycanthrope will be much better educated. He will speak two or three languages well. His math will be college level while he is still in high school. He will probably not hold his lycanthrope parents in contempt. He will understand something about other cultures.

The werewolf will barely speak a version of English, (American). He will know little or nothing about other cultures and assume that America is the center of the Universe. He will most likely depreciate his parents who try their best to give him everything his underdeveloped mind thinks it wants. Basically, if you have to spend any time at all with one or the other…you will want to choose the European.

Just in case I recommend a Walther 9 mm short loaded with a hollow point made with Ag. Standard silver with 7.5% copper is OK too. If you strike the lycanthrope square in the heart area the small percentage of copper should not alter the desired effect.

Take care because they can get itchy around a full Moon but you will have much better time out at night with the European. 17 year old American werewolves are immature and quite boring.

Good luck on survival

Lycanthropy is the new clinical term for werewolf.
Though the word lycanthropy isn't that new at all.
Nor is werewolf, werewolf is German for werwolf,
of which wer - meaning 'man' and wolf meaning
'wild dog'. Whereas Lycanthrope is Latin for the
transformation on a full moon to a werewolf.
Lycan means wolf or Lycos meaning 'wolf' too in
Greek and anthropos meaning 'man' too.
Lycanthrope means wolfman. Therian means
animal or animal spirit and thrope from anthropos
means man again.
There are several types of lycanthropy, clinical
is one of which a mental and health disease of
excessive hair growth, simular to werewolf
syndrome. Many people mistake werewolves
with those with excessive hair. Werewolf meant
half man - half wolf, not one who changes to wolf
and then to man. This is mixed up alot. There was
no such actual tale of such a form at that time.
The werewolf believing era began in the Viking
times, when people wore dead wolf to look more
like warriors of which others will be frightened of.
Though werewolf appeared across the world and
still are, because this is so, people believe that
they exist and so do I and many claim to have
seen them, whether they have or not is a different
matter. Man has wished to be like a wolf ever since
it saw it capabilities of hunting, when they started
eating meat and domesticating wolf into dogs.
Loup-Garou was developed in most other eastern
European languages.
In fact the most modern films show the most of the
old art of which the werewolf was really claimed to
look like.
http://thehuntersmoon.com/ shows some
of the modernly copied.
Werewolf are not a myth.

lycanthrope is the state of being a person has when it changes to another form. Be it werewolf, werefox, wererat, etc.

A Werewolf is the end result of the change of a lycanthrope. And is the most popular one we hear about.

Lycanthropes are wolf-men. They walk on two legs, their eyes glow, and they grow claws and fangs. This is what a lycanthrope is when it shifts out of it s human form.
Werewolves shift completely into a wolf.

I thought they were the same thing. A werewolf is just a guy suffering from lycanthropy. And people called them "lycanthropes" when they want to impress other people with their grasp of scientific verbage.

They are both the same thing just different wording. Skinwalkers are actually shape shifters and not werewolves. There is actually a Steven King book and movie called Skinwalkers and I thought the movie was pretty good. In the movie they look nothing like werewolves.

um...I'm not sure but I've heard that a Lycanthrope is a person who only believes that he/she is a werewolf. They're lead to believe they've been cursed and there for start exibiting symtoms of turning into some sort of beast. But really it's all in their head. They make their body change into a beast becuase they believe it's what supposed to happen.....or something like that....
