Way too much thinking. I encounter up to 100 new people each day. Calculating and thinking about such a question wouldn't allow me to do anything else but think. Perhaps that is your goal.

Only in hindsight .
By looking back over the years and, how our attitude has changed.
Thinking back to the time before and ,the times after.
I think each of us determines how a friendship plays a role in our lives by the attitude we take toward what that person says, does, and how we are willing to allow that friend affect us .

So do you want to find out so you can better use your friends?
Just enjoy their friendship and help, provide help if they need it.
We as human beings are social creatures, who need to interact with other people, so just interacting, helping or talking to a friend is good for both of you.
I say just enjoy their company and presance wuthout asking why. If you knew the reason why, it might spoli the friendship.

You have to have your own judgement on that.
if you meet good people ,learn from the them.
If you meet bad people that is to test you, how strong you are.

You cannot until he or she completes their 'mission'. My best friend was there for me long 15 years and then simply turned away from me. It made me realize that she had to teach me not to focus on one person, see the whole picture. I have lots of friends now and am thankful to her for giving this lesson.
