One very easy method is to take an example or description of the project, with measurements to Home Depot or Lowes, contractor dept. They will be happy to not only list the possible material choices, but price them as well.

Obviously you know the project, and in the context of your Q, we don't strictly need that info, but it could have helped offer more suggestions.

Lumber is sold,,,depending on what you need, by the linear foot, the piece, often pre-cut, or the sheet, for paneling. Example: If you were building a Deck, you'd determine the size; width/length/ and type of lumber...2x material or 7/8 decking lumber. Then treated or not, as well as BREED of wood. If you happened to need enough for A 10 X 10 deck; you'd buy it in 10 ft lengths, for the top, plus bracing, 4x4 posts for support, and that would allow,,,IN your PLAN for someone to price out the cost, as well as the quantity.
