bottom right
you will see the wireless icon - that is the windows wireless utility ( assume you are using windows)
scan for networks
then select connect
if your brother has a security code you will have to enter it twice.
If you want to ensure that your computer only logs onto your brothe's signal in the advanced settings of the windows network utlilty ( change advanced settings)
> wireless networking
> uncheck " connect to non preferred networks"
As well turn on the encryption in the router so that you will not log onto the others and only you can log onto yours
If your brother has his set up out of the box you may well have the same settings as the neighbour so even if you set it to log onto it will log onto both

The biggest problem with wireless is that the routers are all set to the same channel - channel 6
You will get the signal but no internet
Have your brother change his channel from channle six to channel 1 or 11 ( you can use any of the 12)
a very usefull program is network magic

If you want to see the other networks and their channels install this

I would advise to install network magic
It will make the connection to your brother's wireless network easy and in simple english
It will be a full version ( printer and file sharing) for a week.
After that it will still do what you want in the basic version

first and foremost, his actual computer isn't sending you any type of signal to have to connect to the internet, this is done solely by the wireless router in his room (unless he's set up for ad hoc which is a whole different discussion). ask your brother to log into the router and find out what the SSID is so that you can verify which wireless connection to connect to. if he has security setup (WEP, WPA or WPA2) then ask him for the password. when you view all the wireless networks that are reachable by your laptop, choose his SSID and click connect, it'll ask you for the password (if he has security set up on it) and your good to go.......unless you are out of range from his wireless router. if you want to connect wireless with the internet and be able to share files, you'll have to set up a workgroup and both be members of this workgroup. if you have any other questions, feel free to message me.

You need a wireless router. His computer can not "send" a signal. Also make sure you laptop has a wireless card included.

you need to make sure that he has a wireless router hooked up to his computer as well as him being connected to the internet. then your computer should constantly search for wireless signals as long as your WLAN (wireless local area network) is turned on. so check those and see.

well.. the only he he's able to send you a signal is if the router is connected to his desktop. if you're getting other connections, check on the list, and pick your connection. if it's not there. then your laptop can not see your brother's router. therefore you can't get internet.
