FCS is Football Championship Subdivision and FBS is Football Bowl Subdivision.

Championship Subdivision for the former 1-AA teams (App. State, Murray State), because they play a playoff to decide their championships.

Bowl Subdivision for the former 1-A teams (like Michigan, USC, Florida) because they all play in bowls.

I am confused. I thought Jacksonville State in Jacksonville, Alabama, was a FCS team and the University of Mississippi was a FBS team in the Southeastern conference. Jacksonville State defeated the University of Mississippi a few years ago (and almost defeated Florida State the year before. Florida State won within the last minute.) If the Appalachain State and Michigan game was the first time that a FCS team beat a FBS team, it was a long time ago.

I gave you the STAR because this is the kind of question that helps the less knowledgeable fan gain knowledge and insight into college football and at the same time can encourage the casual viewer to watch more of specific teams.
Generally, I’ll fiip past college games unless a play or player catches my eye and then I’ll watch a little. Or I’ll watch the teams that specific players and or coaches and or rivals and or lower tier teams play a team of the upper echelon.
I gave Greg B a thumbs up for giving a thoughtful and knowledgeable answer without being mean-spirited and dissin’ the asker for not knowing.
Once upon a time Greg B didn’t know either.
TOMMYBOY gave a similar good answer but assumed that the asker knows the meaning of BCS.
Bowl Championship Series.
I looked it up.
SEE.

FBS is what was called Division I-A teams and FCS is what used to be division I-AA teams.

I-A uses a bowl system and the BCS to crown a champ (thus Bowl Series), while the I-AA colleges (and all the smaller ones below them) use a playoff system (championship series).

The requirements are very difficult. For example must the team have a special sponsoring manager and a lot of things more. Greetings The Freak
