If you can fit your down comforter and pillows into your washing machine and dryer then you can wash them. Most comforters are too big to fit and may damage your washer or make a mess.

Since down soaks up a great deal of water, you need to soak them in water first, check your machine to see if you have a water soak cycle. Then use a regular cycle to wash the now-wet comforter and/or pillows. You do need to make sure they do not have any holes in them or your may end up with free floating feathers.

A wet comforter is very heavy so you need to make sure it is distributed evenly in your washer or it will get out of kilter and bang around and even tip water out.

After the washing is done, place them into the dryer along with a clean, dry tennis shoe. The shoe bangs around and fluffs the down. It may take more than one dry cycle to completely dry the comforter. It does not dry well when hung out, it needs the dryer to fluff it properly.

You can try this out with a pillow and see if you like the results before trying the comforter. If you do not like the results then you can use a dry cleaner.

Take everything to the laundromat. Use one of the HUGE front loaders, and wash. Put them in the dryer, with medium heat, and dry. Add a couple of pairs of sneakers. This will probably take an hour, or more. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY AT THE DRY CLEANERS! I have down pillows and comforters I have had for years, and they have never seen a dry cleaners!

I wash my down pillows and comforter in my washing machine. The care instructions suggest dry cleaning, but say the items are also machine washable. The pillows and comforter don't immerse easily in water, so require two or three wash cycles. Between cycles, the comforter needs to be removed and put back in so that all areas of it get cleaned. Mine come out great. The pillows take "forever" to dry in the dryer. Now that the weather is nicer, I put them all outside to dry and then fluff them in the dryer. (I save electric, don't heat the house, and the bedding is "outdoors fresh".) Check for care instructions. Older comforters and pillows may not be made for home (machine) washing. Perhaps, you can contact the manufacturer.

You should definitely take it to the dry cleaners. i have learned from personal experience that if you wash it, you will not get it all dry and it will mold and leave it smelling sour. after that, there is no help for it.

Real down? Dry clean only. I tried washing once, and it really screwed it up.

if it's made with real down you can only dry clean it.

If it's synthetic you can wash it in a large machine at the Laundromat.

I would say the dry cleaners would be your best bet.

You don't want to use water;-{ dry-cleaners have a process.
