"Dancing with the Stars" is mostly ballroom, so you'll want ballroom lessons. I'd suggest you check your local Yellow Pages, or some of the websites like http://www.ballroomdancers.com for a studio. Id further recommend that you start, the first few years, with the International style ten dances at an independent studio. Add American style later, and if you want, you can try one of the franchise studios. Both Arthur Murray and Fred Astaire have websites, but their packages they tend to sell will not be the best choice for you at this point. They're more geared to older people with more dollars than sense/cents (like me). Note that most studios in the US teach American style, so you'll have to ask at the very beginning if they teach International style.

Reality shows mislead people into thinking that this kind of dancing, or any kind of dancing is something you can do really quick. Dancing takes time, patience and tons of practice. At the very least you need to go through some kind of formal education such as classical or modern dance to get the lingo they use and which is derived from French. The technique is somethin that you also get there.
While choreographies like Britney Spears' are respectable, they cannot be called dancing if you do not have the proper training, this type takes a lot of stuff from jazz and contemporary styles and while some people have a natural talent for it, they still needed schooling and training.
Check out special clinics by actual professionals, test the waters with them and measure your knowledge and technical skills by what they can teach you, but even they will use proper dance lingo and request you do a plie or a demi-plie or a jette or an arabesque or start off from a second position or first position, which is something all trained dancers understand.

Do exactly what WWD said. Go to http://www.ballroomdancers.com or http://www.accessdance.com and find a studio that teachers International style ballroom. In general, Arthur Murray and Fred Astaire studios are not the best choise for your goal, due to the financial structure of their program. But there are some exceptions. If you find teachers there who compete *professionally* not Pro/Am then it might be worth a try. Private studios tend to be more flexible with their curriculum (usually, there isn't any, it up to the teacher to define) thus alllowing you to progress faster.
You can't do it all by yourself, without a teacher or without taking classes. Yeah, you can buy DVD and copy what they do, but you'll end up looking like a "pedestrian" not a ballroom dancer.

it is NEVER too past due to begin dancing. And do not be scared approximately the French aspect. If you need to talk it talk it, if you'll be able to ask if you'll be able to talk english. Don't be concerned approximately being the worst! Everybody learns at there possess velocity. If you're very a ways at the back of in finding out, ask for a little bit of additional aid, i am certain the instructor would possibly not say no!
