Last time I upgraded iTunes, all the songs were removed from my library and I had to go to my hard drive and transfer all the music I wanted back to my iTunes library. How can I avoid this next time?

are the songs in an itunes\itunes music folder? because the new update should automatically add the songs from this. if you consolidate your library then this shouldnt be a problem

save your libery in a different file, or burn it on a Data CD.
That´s only if you wanna make sure, usually it should keep the libary anyway
