The Speed of light in a vacuum is 186,000 miles/second. How many meter/hour is this equivalent to? This is a chemistry problem that I have...I have many more...so if you can explain to me better than my professor can...please, please, get back to me.

1mi = 1610m
1s = (1/3600)hr
so
186000mi/s
= 186000 1610m/(1/3600)hr
= 186000*1610 /(1/3600) m/hr
= 186000*1610*3600 m/hr
= 1.08E12 m/hr

the end
.

use "unit factor method"

idea is this...
1) any number x 1 = that number
2) units on the top and bottom of a fraction cancel just like numbers do.
3) equalities can be made to equal 1 by dividing both sides by one side.....example....
2.54 cm = 1 in -----> 2.54 cm/ 2.54cm = 1 in/2.54cm ---->
1 = 1 in/2.54cm
4) for cubes (etc) cube both sides of 1 = 1 in/2.54cm
1^3 = 1 = (1 in/2.54cm)^3
so here's how it works. you know an equality and make a ratio out of it. make the power whatever you need. then set up an equation like....

to convert cm to inches.

10 cm = 10 cm x 1 = 10 cm x (1 in/2.54cm)
note cm's cancel and your left with... 10 cm = 3.94 in

to convert say 100 ml to m^3.....

100 ml = 100 ml x (1 cm^3 / ml ) x (1 m / 100cm )^3 = .0001 m^3.... ml, cm have canceled.

****** answer *******

in your case....

186,000 mi/s = speed of light
1 in = 2.54 cm
12 in = 1 foot
5280 feet = 1 mile
100 cm = 1 m
60 s = 1 min
60 min = 1 hr

so....

186,000 mi/s = 186,000 mi/s x (5280 ft / mi) x ( 12 in / 1 ft) x (2.54 cm / 1 in) x (1 m / 100 cm) x ( 60 s / 1 min) x ( 60 min / 1 hr) = 1.08 x 10^12 m/hr

notice that all the units have cancelled except for m and hr

(186,000 miles/1 second)(1 kilometer/0.62 miles) = 300,000 kilometers/second

(300,000 kilometers/1 second)(1000 meters/1 kilometer) = 300,000,000 meters/second

(300,000,000 meters/1 second)(60 seonds/1 minute) = 18,000,000,000 meters/minute

(18,000,000,000 meters/1 minute)(60 minutes/1 hour) = 1,080,000,000,000 meters/hour

It is possible to string all of the conversions into a single step. However, if you are having trouble with conversions, you will find it easier to perform each step separately. Convert one unit at a time. The key is to find a unit fraction (equal to 1) which will cancel out one unit and convert it to another unit.

Convert Miles to metres
1 mile = 1600.2 metres
18600 x 1600.2 = 297637200 metres per second
Convert Hours to Seconds
1 hour = 3600 seconds
297637200 x 3600 = 1.07 x 10^12 metres per hour

0.0005689m x a hundred cm/a million m = ... cm it rather is it! in the conversion ingredient, the element on precise is nicely easily worth a similar using fact the thng on the backside, and units cancel to take you the place you want to bypass.
