I have two pressure tanks on my water system. One tank is on the line from the well to a water holding tank. The other is from the water holding tank to the plumbing inside the home. My question is do I really need the first pressure tank that goes on the well to holding tank line. The tank has started to leak but after looking at the set up I can not see why it is needed.

Sounds like the possible reason for 2 tanks was to add capacity to the system. if your well is a low volume well this may have been the answer to that problem. I would find out the GPM (Gallons Per Minute) of you well pump, and the fluid capacity of your tanks. this will help you make a more informed decision as to whether you can live with one tank or two.
Another issue you may want to look at is if both tanks are the same age and one is leaking it may be a short time before the other one starts to leak.
You may want to look at replacing both tanks with one larger capacity tank.

you positively do not need two pressure tanks the purpose of a pressure tank is to regulate the well pump now one of them may just be a storage tank for volume if you have a weak well but it should not have any wires to it You need the tank with the little control box and the wiring
