I'm a girl that took a while to get this down too...

First, get a long nail.
Hold it to the wall making sure it is perpendicular to the wall (that it sticks straight out).
Just hold it by almost the very end(sharp point) with two or three fingers.
Then just lightly and slowly tap it with the hammer a few times... this at first might not seem like it's doing anything but after a bit you'll see it's slightly inbedded in the wall.
Once it's about a quarter in take your fingers away so you won't hit them with the hammer and give the nail a steady-not-too-hard wack. This might take more than one hit to get it perfect too.

-hope this helps!

The safest and easiest way is to drill a hole smaller than the nail before you nail. This takes time but provides ease and accuracy and at the same time saving your thumb. Anyone can nail starting this way.

try hitting the hammer with your hand holding it at the very end so it swings better. if yyour walls are made of some very hard material ithat would also cause your nails to bend, try using some smaller screws instead and see if they work easier for ya
