You know, the interesting thing about that question is why that particular act of dedication and loyalty has such staying power and resonates with us so clearly.
Was it because of some sense of duty? Loyalty? Attempt to help calm nerves? Some sort of self sacrifice?
Or just a sense of angst and tragedy for what was happening all around them while they played even though they knew the outcome.
Perhaps it's all of those things.

If I were on the Titanic while it sank, I would be a part of the band. If I wasn't a part of the band, I would tell the band to escape the sinking ship.

No, at that point, I think I'd be more interested in lifeboats than music. And it seems a little pointless for me that they did continue to play, when they could have been at least attempting to save themselves, maybe jumping and swimming, or something.

..... there are cases...people's grandeur and inner strength amazes me..... I can't possibly think what was going through their minds... I just believe they were dedicated, grand persons, offering their last moments to sooth and calm down people in panic. They could even forget their own panic. That's what I call grandeur.

I think they didn't think it was as serious as it was and that was a different time and place and class was very prevelant. the working stiffs wouldn't dream of taking a seat in a life boat away from a rich person.

Sure. It'd be nice to have some music while my lifeboat is pulling away.
