thinned out. She has been having short contractions since saturday morning but there is no consistancy with them. Shouldn't the doctor induce her? She eas given 3 different due dates, Sept. 3, 9,14. What do you think?

my friend was pregnant and she was dialated to 3 and was about 75% efaced and worked and was that for about 2 months and then it finally progressed and had the baby, so know i dont think they should induce her unless shes really late, but she still has time and the baby isnt ready to come out.

I just gave birth 2 weeks ago. I went to the hospital because my water broke, but I had no contractions, and I was barely effaced, although I was dialated somewhat.
The doctor explained that it does not matter how many centimeters you are dialated -- you can walk around dialated for quite a while! -- you have to be fully effaced before dialation even starts to matter.

75% effacement is not bad! Once she reaches 100%, she will be at least 4 centimeters dialated already, maybe even more. Fantastic! She can probably expect a relatively quick labor.

In any event, there is no point in inducing her yet. She has not even passed her first due date. Anyway, I have experienced labor induction 3 times, and it is a LOT more painful than regular labor.

I would say that you are probably going to be a grandmother on Sept 3 or so :-)

BTW: Nipple stimulation results in some pretty strong contractions, and is therefore not a prefferable mode of "do-it-yourself" labor induction.
I personally have walked till I got agonizing backaches, and it has never started labor for me.
Things are going well as is -- IMO, she should rest and gather her strength for the hard work to come, rather than knocking herself out trying to induce labor.

Why should the doctor induce her, when she is progressing on her own naturally?

It sounds as if labor is imminent, and IMO induction is not necessary. The baby will make an appearance when s/he is ready-and I am guessing it is not that long away!

If she wants to try and speed things up on her own, she can try walking (the gravity and motion helps with progression), intercourse (sperm contains prostaglandins, which helps soften/ripen the cervix and in addition, the motion tends to start contractions which COULD form a pattern), and/or nipple stimulation (also releases the body's natural form of oxytocin, which will help her labor progress).

Two methods of artificial induction are similar to the methods listed above-Cervadil, used as a vaginal suppository to ripen the cervix, is derived from the sperm of swine (aka pigs) and is used because of the prostaglandolins. Pitocin is a form of oxytocin, which is a hormone that our body naturally releases and is why the nipple stimulation will work.

Congratulations to both of you!

I wouldn't encourage inducement as it is more painful then natural labor - i would instead have her get some rest, take a warm bath, go for long walk and get some good food in her. The more walking she does now, the more likely she will spontaneously go into natural labor (her body is almost there why force it faster than it is ready to do)

If she finds that those do not help, tell her (sorry mom) to go have sex and have her husband pay plenty of attention to her nipples (nipple stimulation helps induce labor naturally)

Good luck on the grand baby - hope everything goes well and soon for yea's

The doctor is probably waiting for nature to take its course. Sounds like her water will break any minute!

Being induced can make labor a lot more painful and longer, so it's usually better to let it happen on its own, and it sounds like that is exactly what is happening.

I have a 7 month old, so I know how frustrating the final days can be!!

Congratulations!!!!

It sounds like the baby is coming fine on its own and the doctor is making a good decision. Being induced is painful, and I'd want to avoid it if at all possible.

i think that as long as the baby is ok she should wait it out the baby will come when its ready and from the sound of it either the third or the 9 look to be the due date but again its up to the baby

no the doctor shouldnt enduce her it sounds like the baby is getting ready to appear anytime, so why would there be any need for an induction?? The baby will comes when its ready, never heard of anyone having 3 dates?

I dont think she should be induced. If she is already to 4cm, she is in labor. They typically don't induce until your past your due date, and since her latest due date is not for 12 more days, why induce? There is no reason to induce when she is already in labor and has a few days to go.

It's better for mom and baby to let nature take its course. She's really close, it'll be any day now.
