NOTE: this is a simplified and brief response; if you want more details, come to the Israel section under Travel; there are many Muslims and Jews there.
Palestine has been the home of the Jews for almost four thousand years continuously.
Many Muslims from neighbouring Arab countries also migrated there.
In 1948, the British, who held the mandate for Palestine, suggested partition: dividing the land between Jews and Muslims.
The Jews agreed.
The Arabs refused.
The surrounding Arab countries then attacked Israel, within 12 hours of Israel being officially established.
In defending herself, Israel pushed the attackers back and gained more land; she kept this so she could have secure borders.
The Palestinians have suffered terribly; they are not helped by any of the Muslim countries.
Recently, the Palestinians voted for Hamas; this is a terrorist group which has carried out many suicide bombings in Israel. They could instead have elected Fatah, a more moderate group which wanted peace talks with Israel.
Hamas went crazy and seized control in Gaza, and began killing all the Palestinians who belonged to, or supported Fatah.

Since the beginning of times, that land has belonged to the Hebrews. It was their land before they were enslaved in Egypt and during the Exodus when they were leaving for the "Promised Land", it was their *own land* to where they were returning. After Jesus death, around 70 AC, the Romans scattered the Jews around the world known for them, what was called the Second Great Diaspora, and changed the land's name to Palestine, on an intent to wipe the Jews from the face of the earth. Up to those times, Palestine was just part of the Iand of Israel. The land was invaded by people from the surrounding Arab countries. Jews slowly were returning to their land, but found themselves as the minority with no authority over what was theirs. When the United Nations "created' the State of Israel in 1948, they created nothing, they just returned to the Jews what has been always theirs.

Back during WWII there was a Grand Mufti in Jerusalem who was allied with Hitler, and wanted to expel all the Jews; but after WWII the world established Israel, and the followers of the Grand Mufti couldn't stand it, and their descendants are still trying to expel the Jews. Israel accepts Arabs as citizens as long as they don't try to kill people.
