My English teacher brought up a good point a few years ago. I agreed with her that everything you do is for yourself. You would die for the people you care about so you wouldn't have to deal with the pain. You are nice to people because you like feeling like a good person. What are your thoughts on this?

Sure, it's possible... a lot of people don't die/risk their lives for people so they won't have to deal with pain... they do it out of love.

Jesus is a good example of someone who put others before Himself.

When you care more about someone than you do yourself, then you are experiencing true love. There's no more intense emotion in the world! I love doing things for others, as it gives me such joy to see the joy in them. However, when it comes to those I truly love, I would give my life to save them.

I am also an English teacher, and I'm going to have to disagree a little on what your English teacher said. I believe that the things we do in life is what creates and shapes our lives and how we choose to live them. I do so little for myself, especially since I've gotten older, that it drives my husband wild. We create our own destiny, but I'm of the mind that we are also responsible for helping others create a pleasant and sane future by helping.

At any rate, I hope you have a glorious week ahead! Thanks for the very interesting question! Annie

Your English teacher clearly didn't have children. I would sacrifice everything for my children. It has nothing to do with dealing with pain. It has everything to do with unconditional love. I would sacrifice my own life if it would save my child's life. This love is mirrored in Christianity when people are referred to as "God's children".

Yes, it is possible - the one you give your heart to (significant other) & once you have children you care more for them than any other being in the world :-)

When a a friend asks you to stick around yet you really just want to go home and sleep, you do it for them not yourself.

i think it is possible. i think if someone is willing to die for somone they care more about them because they are choosing for that person to be able to live the rest of their life instead of themself. good question.
