I have places I am thinking of applying to(im 17) like puget sound, maybe lewis and clark, and some more places in californa, where i am. but i looked on studentsreview.com and it seems like everywhere i think i want to go, its full of "hippyish people doing drugs", as one person put it. it is turning me off from places because i am not into stuff like that, im into good clean fun. should i be afraid to apply and go to these places because of people saying there is alot of drugs???

p.s. the reason im so scared is because i go to a small high school where none of it takes place on campus(maybe people do it at home), so im not used to be around it or even ever being pressured to do it........couldnt they put it in ur drink though??I heard they do it at college parties!!

What they mean is that there are more people like that in those schools than in a lot of other ones - maybe half the students use drugs frequently instead of the 15-25% on most campuses. You'll find plenty of people who abstain from drugs on any campus. If you're looking for a more clean-cut school with similar academic standards, similar size, etc., in the northwest, maybe Gonzaga would be more your style, or Whitman if you can get admitted there.

Another thing you might want to do if you want to stay away from peer pressure to use drugs is to request single-sex housing, if they have it. The students in those dorms are often a little better behaved than the students in the coed dorms.

And what course would you want to take that Whitman doesn't offer? A lot of the small, prestigious liberal arts colleges like Whitman have fewer majors than the slightly less prestigious schools, but not necessarily fewer courses offered. They also shy away from the most "preprofessional" degrees, but if you want to do business, you can do economics instead, and if you want journalism, you can do English instead, and if you want engineering, they have 3/2 programs set up with top engineering schools.

All college have some drug use because you have stupid people who r away from home and they figure since I am away I can do what ever I want to do. Once you go to college you will be facing the real world. Drugs r everywhere. It is up to you if you allow people to effect you. Don't worry just go to school get your education, Watch your associations. you r 17 now but once you get older you will understand. I am 28 I know what I am talking about.

You're right to find a place that doesn't have a reputation as a drug/party/drinking school... but in the end, it's up to you not to participate even if others do. You would do this by selecting your friends wisely, and if you are in social situations -- as anyone logically should -- keep an eye on your drinks, etc. so that no one can tamper with anything.

Drug use is not a requirement. You'll find many students just like you, and you'll hang out together and happily proceed with getting an education. My daughter attended a notorious "Party School" and never attended a party. HER choice. Mama wasn't there.

If you aren't into drugs then that's it. It's not like everyone n those schools are into drugs. If you can't find a school as you wish choose a better one from those you have.
Strengthen your confidence.That's what matters!!
Don't let something so trivial, distant you from your goal.
It maybe better said than done, you'd say.
But you'll cope.

Drugs and alcohol are everywhere, you can choose to NOT use them. Peer pressure is always present, but be true to yourself. Good Luck
