Well when you count a pregnancy out to be 40 weeks then you are starting from the first day of your last period. And you ovulate about 2 weeks after that. So your not really pregnant for the first 2 weeks. So right there you can cut it down to only being pregnant for 38 weeks. Than you gotta think well...how many weeks are in a month, 4 right? Well sorta of...4 weeks equals 28 days. And every month but February is 30 or 31 days long. SO that's why it's really only 9 months.
If you aren't good with math than think about it this way or try it if you bored. How many days is 40 weeks? 40 x 7= 280. Now find the date on the Calender of your last period....and start counting up to 280 days. It's only going to put you into a 9th month not a 10th. :)

My doctor told my husband this when he asked the same question:
"pregnancy months" are always 4 weeks which is where the 10 months comes from ( 40 divided by 4 is 10)

It is true that pregnancy lasts 40 weeks, which is ten LUNAR months (4 weeks=1 month). However, only one month (February) actually has an even four weeks in it-all of the other months are slightly longer. Pregnancy is actually 9 months and 1 week, calculated from your LMP (Last Menstrual Period).
In reality, though, you are only actually pregnant for 38 weeks or 8 months and 3 weeks, as conception does not occur until approximately two weeks AFTER your LMP.
It sounds confusing, but after you understand it all it is quite simple. I hope this helps!

If every month only had 28 days pregnancy would be 10 months long - but alas there are months with 30 and 31 days in them so do the math...
40 weeks = 9 months

Its for 2 reasons...1 is that they start from the 1st day of your last period....not the actual date you got prego. Also, some months have 5 weeks

They go by the "Lunar Calendar" which is where each month has exactly 4 weeks...
So therefore you get 40 weeks...
If it were just the normal calendar it would be 9 months because some month have more than 4 weeks...

Actually, since there are 4.3 weeks in a year, 40 weeks is 9.3 months. (52/12= 4.3 40 /4.3=9.3) So its actually closer to 9 months than 10 months.
