Hi Everyone! I am pet/house sitting and last night I ended up getting locked out of the house. The door didn't unlock all the way when I got in, so when I braught the dogs out and closed the door behind me, it locked back - my keys inside! I ended up finally getting in, but I tried using a bent keyring to jimmy the lock and the tip broke off ! Well, the homeowners come home today, and I still have not gotten the metal out of the doorlock - it's jammed in, and it's blocking the keyhole. I feel horrible because the last pet/house sitter they had ended up making some really big and possibly dangerous mistakes, and that caused alot of mistrust and they eneded up firing her. I don't want to look irresponsible! So how do I get this jammed peice of metal out of the doorlock? Help! Thanks :-)

Use a pair of "needle nose" plyers & if that doesn't work, call a local locksmith, & pay for his services yourself. Hey, it happens to many people, especially when it comes to locking keys in a car/home. To error is human. I've done it before, so don't let it upset you. If the people are so perfect & fire you, then so be it.

You can call a locksmith, or you can wait for the owners to get home and simply explain what happened. Offer to replace the lock and be adult about everything. If you were able to get in without a key, the lock isn't very secure in the first place and they shold know that there house is unsafe. You never know. They may applaud your honesty and replace the lock free of charge! Good luck!

maybe you could try vacuuming it out. with a superpower vacuum if you have one. if that doesn't work, call a locksmith. they'll be able to fix it. and if the neighbors do come home, apologize like crazy and offer to pay for whatever it takes to get the metal out. good luck.

oh, and by the way, i would call the locksmith before you try superglue and a tooth pick. putting superglue in a lock will just jam up the mechanics, making things worse. a magnet is a good idea though.

You could try a magnet or needle nose pliers. Or maybe take the knob off and see if there's a way to get it out from the inside.

Use a credit card, as you slide card between door & jam push hard. As for the metal in the lock, just claim somebody must have tried to break in.

Try a strong magnet.
It might work or put a little super glue
on a toothpick and touch it to the piece in the lock.
Or tweezers, if you can get hold of it.
