At one point in history that's all people drank due to the nasty bacteria that was in water and milk. It was from the brewing of beer that pasturization was discovered. People, such as myself, drink it because we make it ourselves. Homebrewing is a great hobby. Also the flavor palate of beer is much broader than wine or hard liquor so more foods pair better with it. It's a very social drink. You don't chug it like soda (unless you're at a frat party) and you don't sip it like wine. Plus it's so darn refreshing!!

Babies are "programmed" to reject anything bitter as in nature that is more likely to be poisonous. Sadly the early preference for sweet things is fed by the ready availability of junk food, etc, in the modern world.
I initially drank cider, but "graduated" to English real-ale beer by age 20. However I didn't enjoy eating brassicas (sprouts, cabbage, etc) until I was nearly 30, and only when I started steaming them - yummy!
I periodically reassure my (now) 12-year old nephews that their tastes in food and drink will broaden with age as the "sweet-programming" wears off.

I drink root beer (soft drink). I like it. I can not drink real beer because it is banned in my religion.

I like the taste. I liked it when my dad used to let me have a sip when I was a little kid.
