I have a laptop at home but, although I am the only user, I cannot install any programmes because I do not have admin priviliges. Is there any way around this?
Thanks.

Ummm. try logging off or switching users from the menu. There should be an administrator account, even if it's not normally displayed or bypassed at startup.

If your account doesn't have currently have admin rights, you can't grant them while logged in to that account.

goto your control panel, select users, and set the settings for your account and the admin account. Make yourself the admin and turn off guest accounts

Boot into safe mode (F2 on start up) then make yourself an admin
