My town recycles. It is a program called Waste Management. They let you drop off appliances twice a year, but if you have one to get rid of before, they will pick it up.Call your mayor's office/town hall and ask his secretary if there is such a program. If not, they can probably tell you where to take the refrigerators in your area.

The FIRST thing you MUST do is make sure there is a CHAIN around the refrigerators and a padlock to lock the chain around the refrigerator so NO ONE can open the door... especially if you have either frigerator stored OUTSIDE anywhere....(in a yard or alley or garage)... I KNOW this is a LAW in NY State because children have been known to use old refrigerators that are stored outside or in garages as HIDING PLACES and once they get INSIDE and close the door, they cannot get OUT and would die if left trapped inside.... you MUST have a locked chain around it OR rip the doors totally off the refrigerators... The only thing I can think of would be to take them to the town dump.... or call a junk man to come take them... (1-800-junk in my town)......as far as recycling them, I don't know---if they can't be fixed, no one is going to want to just take them off your hands... a dump permit is NOT very costly and sometimes, your local garbage collection service has a day each year where they will take things like furniture and appliances... I know where I live it happens in MAY every single year... you could CALL your local garbage collection service and ask their advice as well.

I'm not sure, but if you ask around your community there are probably services that will come and retrieve things of this nature for proper disposal. One thing though: (this used to be a big issue in the past though I haven't heard of it being relevant in years) children would sometimes play inside of discarded refrigerators, get trapped inside and suffocate, so the recommendation was to take the doors off to prevent this kind of tragedy from occurring. Like I said, I haven't heard of a case in years (refrigerators don't "latch" the way they used to, either) but it's still a sound suggestion. Better safe than sorry.

1) SAFETY FIRST ! ! !.....Remove the doors
2) Have the "refrigerant" removed.....per E P A req. a hvac tech will remove it for free ( for reuse)
3) Dispose it off to a scrap metal collector ctr.
4) If you want to donate one, I'll take it for class hands-on training/practice.

If the compressor works, take it out. they make good vacuum pumps for working on your car or house a/c.

Many of the condenser coils are copper. if so recycle it.

Take the carcass to the dump.

Many communities have an annual "clean up" day.
Usually in the spring.
During that day, you can throw away anything and they will take care of it.
