If you've forgotten your Windows XP login username and password, then replacing the battery won't help. Pulling the battery only clears the BIOS password (if you'd set one, it would have to be entered immediately upon startup, before Windows XP even starts loading) If you're getting the usual Windows splash screen and login prompt, then your problem isn't one that pulling the battery will affect.
To clear/reset your XP password, try this:

FYI, most newer CMOS bateries are flat silver discs like a quarter... usually near the back of the motherboard- here are a few pictures.

If it's the windows XP password you have lost then removing the battery from the mainboard is a waste of time as it will not help at all.
If you need to try and reset the CMOS password then removing the battery may work but thats not definite as some mainboards use non volatile memory to store the passwords
Anyway, the battery is usually a lithium cell and looks like a silver coin, you should be able to slide it sideways out of the holder to remove it

This is your CMOS batter, that would only reset your BIOS password. If you have lost your XP Password, this will not help.
That said, the battery is shaped-like and about the size of a nickel. It's usually local in a corner of the motherboard, opposite the RAM and processor.
If you need to reset your XP password, but don't want to reinstall, there are a couple of options. Are you runing XP Home? If so, you can reboot the machine and press F8 a couple of times when you turn it on. Select to boot in safe mode. In XP Home, safe mode has a default Administrator account with no password. Log ino to this account, and reset your password, or create a new account.
If you are runnin XP pro, try a rescue CD like Trinity Rescue Kit. These are linux live CDs with utilities for resseting passwords.

I don't think that will reset it since those are stored in the hard drive. However it is inside the computer case on the largest main board it just looks like a watch battery. you could take it out for 2 minutes I suppose, but all that does to my knowledge is keep the time setting for the CMOS and has nothing to do with the windows OS. Good Luck.

In most (but not all) machines, it is a "button" or "wafer" type battery -- the kinds that are used in watches and hearing aids, for example. It is usually held in place by some sort of spring clip. Before you take it out, look at it *carefully* to see whether the + or - side of the battery faces up, and be careful to replace it correctly.
If you're still stuck, try going to the Web site of the computer maker -- many of them have copies of their user manuals available online, and those will usually tell you how to replace the battery.
PS: While you have the battery out, make a note of the type number, voltage, etc. It will eventually need replacement, and then you'll already know what kind to get.

First of all, be sure you're grounded ( touch the chassis or power supply case). You can also buy a wrist strap that clips onto the computer chassis. DON'T DO THIS AND YOU STAND TO 'FRY' YOUR PC...not a healthy situation.
As for the battery, it there is one on your mother board it will be visible on the top of the board. It should look like an oversized flat, watch battery. Look carefully at how it's mounted BEFORE trying to remove it and make sure not to handle either face of the new battery when installing it!

It looks llike a watch battery on steroids....
If it is the XP password that you need to reset, then taking the battery out won't help, that is for a CMOS password only.
For XP, boot into safe mode, and go into the administrator user ID there, then make the necessary changes.

it looks like a watch battery. be sure not to press down to hard to remove it or you will break the contacts.
if you dont remember your pass in xp then you need a Hirens Bootdisk to reset your pass. it resets it and you can access your local computer but if your on a network then you will have to redo the network process over.

Actually the battery looks remarkable like the flat round batteries in your watch. It should be on the motherboard, the one big board all of the other cards are connected to. Whatever you do, don't use magnatized tools if you use any.
