Everyone seems to talk a lot about popular culture, news, and sex. I don't really care that much of any of them, I am completely clueless how people can carry on a conversation on about things thats been stated and doesn't need any further statement. No one seems to want to talk about the unusual.
Am I naive?
Enlighten me.

You are mature... i feel the same way. I like discussing philosophy, logic, science and the unknown.
I get into deep discussion about human motives and behaviors. I am thoroughly interested in the nature of humanity moreso than any animal.
I also take a great interest in the arts, cinematography and photography. Historical, contemporary and urban styles.
I also love discussing world history. Why things are the way they are, how everything became as it is, what led up to our current state of affairs in the world... etc.
I never talk about women, drugs/alcohol, parties or anything most guys talk about. It's all very boring and over-talked about and extremely mundane.

I would like to discuss Higgs Boson with you and implications for its discovery. Also the origin and fate of the dark matter in the universe and its implication for the ultimate fate of the cosmos. Do you think the end will be thermal death or the universe will keep expanding and how dark matter will affect either.

Everybody has an opinion on things that go on around us, and they like to share their opinions with their friends. Perhaps they disagree with the slant of the news article, perhaps they think something wasn't true in it. Whatever it is, we like to talk about it and see what others think about it.
As to the second part of your question, there are plenty of people who like to talk about the unusual. Just keep looking and you will find them. Maybe check out groups on Yahoo in a field you are interested in. Or if you are on 360, do a search on a topic and you will find other like-minded people.
