Usually an x-ray is the best way to rule out a fractured ankle. But if there is no obvious deformity and if the person is not in great pain, put the person at rest, wrap the ankle in an elastic bandage, elevate it and apply ice. Many sprains will resolve in a day or two, making an x-ray unnecessary.
Returning to regular activity is another issue. Severe strains should be carefully rehabed before returning to stressful situations such a sports.

An xray is fast, easy, and will diagnose a fracture. When you start to resume sports, make sure you get a high quality ankle brace like an ASO ankle brace. This will make your return to sports much safer and easier as you try to regain your natural coordination, and agility again: http://www.dme-direct.com/aso-ankle-braces-brace-supports-support-stabilizer/

A break will generally have immediate and severe swelling and bruising. A sprain will have bruising and swelling as well, however tipically not to the same degree.
