J has to grow the difference between those two numbers.
Change both numbers to inches to make life easy.
5 ft 2 1/2 inches is 5x12 + 2 +.5 which is 62.50 for Al.
4 ft 7 1/4 inches is 4x12 + 7 + .25 which is 55.25
Now subtract 55.25 from 62.50 for 7.25 inches
That is 7 1/4 inches more.

take the measurements make them into complete fractions
62 1/2 inches 55 1/4 inches
Now make a common denominator
62 2/4 inches 55 1/4 inches
Now subtract: whole numbers from whole, fractions from fractions:
7 1/4 inches therefore j has to grow 7 1/4 inches to be as tall as Al.
Please make note of how this is done so you can try it yourself next time, ok?

1ft=12 inch.
Therefore Al is (5x12)+2+1/2 (or we can say 0.5) =62.5 inches tall
J is (4x12)+7+1/4 ( or we can say 0.25)=55.25 inches
Al-J= The difference betweent the 2 heights and how much J will have to grow to be as tall as Al.
62.5-55.25=7.25 inches
J wil have to grow 7.25 inches to be as tall as Al
