can someone please tell me what type of file to download if i was going to download a film and put it on a dvd. avi, mpg etc xxxxxxxxx

Films are often stored online as both avi and mpg. To put it onto a DVD you need DVD authoring/burning software that can convert it to standard DVD format.

If you just save an avi. file to a data DVD (either +R or -R), you can play on your computer, but many DVD players won't recognize it...

well avi would be the way to go if your stand alone dvd player can play it. 99% of the newer ones can (should be on the front of the player avi=divx)

if not, convert the avi to dvd format using convertxtodvd

mpg should be avoided

.avi and .wmv formats are supposed mostly for dvds. But download "ConvertXDVD" As it converts pretty much EVERY time of format, and you can add a couple of gig of space onto the dvd using this programme.
