NO...........Schools are institutions for learning, not learning what the newest hairstyle is or if Angelina Jolie is adopting yet another kid for publicity's sake.......Case in point, although I'm deviating from the question: we quit going to movie theaters due to the fact that the last time we were in one, the jerk sitting behind us got and answered 5 count 'em 5 calls during the flick, HOW RUDE IS THAT????

All cell phones seem to be for parents (the neglectful bastards they've turned into) is an ELECTRONIC LEASH of sorts......Gee, I seemed to go through 14 years of school, and NEVER needed cell phones (they weren't around then) and seemed to survive any EMERGENCIES...........

Thank God that the State of California is banning all hand held cell phones while driving in June 2008............I'm just waiting for then......HANG UP AND DRIVE!!!!!!!

I think that they should be allowed in the school but they should be turned off and kept in their lockers. I an emergency comes up, I think the school should be able to let the kids go to their lockers to call their families. This will reduce the amount of cheaters with electronics.

I also went to school at a time when cells phones were not readily available, especially for less advantaged people. I survived elementary, high school AND college without one. If there was ever an emergency, I would use the main office's phone or the pay phones at the school. When I was in college, I had a dorm phone that I could call my house on emergencies or just to say hello.

I do believe the the times now are not the same as before but I think that letting kids use cell phones safely is the best answer. Just let them have it but turned off and in their lockers. We cannot account for allll the things that can go wrong!!

There are only certain situations in whch a kid going to school would ever need a cell phone. And in those cases it is usually because a parent is not readily available before or after school to be with the children. In some of these cases, the phone is not needed during school time and should be turned off.

I think you can bring it to school, but during classes, you should put it in the locker or something. Reason that you need it is to keep in touch with parents and all those responsibility craps, so yeah I'd say we need it. It's just that the school doesn't like the idea cos, all these fcuked up kids used it for cheating, or some illegal or dangerous activities. A few bad apples and the whole tree suffers. In my days, and and that's about 10 years ago and more :P, we don't have cell phones. There are public phones in school so that good girls like me will call home when something is up.

With all the things that have happened at schools and other places and if you can afford one.....I beleive people should have them. It could be the last words from a loved one or the one picture from a camera phone that could help the police.

On the other hand people need to stop the excessive use of it at certain times. I would hate to be a teacher having to teach a class with cell phones going off every few seconds. Just like I can't stand being held up because some person blocks the lane at the store because they have to stop at every item they are thinking of buying to call every family member to see what kind of chips they want or if they want peas or beans.

I mean it does bring people closer but it's gone to excess. Heck my neighbor barely lets 10 min. go by where she doesn't HAVE to call her 17 yr. old son to report the fact she just finished doing the laundry or call her husband to say there's a new weed growing in the garden. Some things can wait.

All I can say is if people don't get a grip on the usage, more and more places are going to ban them and people won't be able to get or make a really truely "important" call. I mean they aren't ment to share every thought that crosses your mind at any given moment.

While many schools have banned cell phones on the premises altogether, many are starting to allow the kids to have them but not turned on to use. The school districts feel with all the violence (Columbine for example) at schools today that the kids should have them for emergencies only, and I agree.

Well it depends, if as in my case you are attending school, and have kids that are each either in school or other activities, then you must have your cell phone with you on low volume or vibrate when in the classroom, our teacher is cool about that because we are all adults with children.

Now if it is for kids in schools, then I think cell phones should be turned off while in classrooms.
If there is a family emergency the parent usually contacts the school first so the kid can be taken out of school etc.
I think is a little unrealistic to expect kids not to access their phones even if it just to take a peek at messages. So there has to be a balance.

absolutley! if there was a family emergency and they needed to get in touch with you immediatly, they can call your cell phone. "well they could call the school..." well idk about your school, but our phones are ALWAYS busy! seriously..if im staying home sick or something it takes my dad 20 minutes to get a hold of them.

sure, some kids will abuse it, but teachers can set limits. if theres a test, they collect all the phones in the front of the room, and if you are seen/heard using it during the test, you get a detention or something. they shouldn't be restricted 100% from school, just in situations in which you could still use it in case of an emergency, however not to abuse it and cheat (which is mostly why teachers don't allow them)

or your teachers could just be cool about it like one of mine...if your phone goes off she answers it, takes a message, turns it off and gives it back to you. :)

I think that students should be able to have cell phones in school and so should faulty and staff because anything can happen. There just has to be rules with the cell phone. I mean if you are in the hallway talking to someone on the phone who really cares, but you shouldn't be on the phone in class unless it is a serious situation. I mean students, faulty and staff already have them so just deal with it.
