Not to take anything away from Appalachian State's performance, but I think we're overdoing it just a tad. This is the beauty of college football, the little guy jumps up to beat the big guy from time to time. This is one of those David vs Goliath times, and people always over react to stuff like this. Last year everyone was saying that Boise State should've been playing for the title after they beat a 2 loss Oklahoma team from the terrible (only 2 ranked teams) Big 12. We don't need more teams clogging up the D1A league right now, let's just take a few weeks before we say they are ready to take on USC. This is just the latest example of why we should be waiting at least a week or 2 (I think 3) before we release an initial set of rankings. It was quite apparent that old blue was not the 5th best team in the country. I'm sorry but Chad Henne is a freaking joke.

Too many people don't know what they are talking about.

There is no requirement to what conference you have to join. No, App. State would not have to join C-USA, the Big East, or the ACC. The ACC wouldn't do it because they expanded to 12 teams for a reason. That is why Cuse was left out to begin with. Same with C-USA.

More than likely, the would join the Sun Belt.

And no, teams do not have to be invited to join a conference to move up. They simply have to meet requirements and apply. Recently, though, FAU, FIU, and WKU have applied to move up and play in the Sun Belt like they do for all other sports. App. State would fit in that conference, give them a solid 10 teams (unlike the discontorted Big "11"), and would get the Sun Belt a reasonable number of bowl bids (2-3) and some competition with teams like Lafayette, North Texas, and Arkansas State in that conference.

And Appalachian State has been competitve for several years at I-AA much like Marshall and Boise State were before they moved. Hey, that Boise State school sounds familiar. They have been extremely successful since moving up. A little slow at first, but the late 90's and this decade, they have been great. App. State has been good long before the win over Michigan, which people are blinded by. They think the team is a .500 team and got lucky when they are 2-time defending champions.

Will they move up? Probably not. The NCAA is probably going to keep things as they are for now, or as long as possible. 120 teams currently (officially in 2009) is a good solid number they'd like to keep, although there are some other 1-AA teams like Montana that could compete at 1-A. And no, Montana wouldn't have to join the Pac 10. Why everyone thinks you have to join a major conference, I don't know. Montana vs. Boise State would be a great game. Lots of scoring. Attendance would be their only issue.

they are not ready for D-1A. the only conferences they could join would be the acc big east or conference USA. Appalachian State won the last 2 D-1A national championships.Think long and hard before you answer this question. If the mountaineers played in the acc big east or conference usa every year would they still be a competitive team? Another question. Would they be able to sell out every home game against these opponents? Final question. Appalachian State is in North Carolian. How do you convince players from the state of North Carolina when you could conceivebly play in the same conference as Duke North Carolina or NC State. Not to mention Charlotte. They aint ready just because they beat michigan.

They aren't ready to move up nor do I think that they want to. I think they are happy being a dominate 1-AA powerhouse. Talent wise and coaching wise I think this team has what it takes to compete in 1-A football in a conference such as the Sun Belt, the MAC, or maybe even conference USA; but it would take a lot of effort.

They would have to expand their stadium, upgrade their facilities, have a big enough budget to fly all over the country, recruit against the best schools, and numerous other things.

But the big kicker is this...If they join a conference they have a two year probationary period where they are still in 1-AA but they get more scholarships for athletes but aren't allowed to participate in postseason play for the two years before they make the jump to 1-A. I don't think the benefits of jumping to 1-A for App. State outweigh the benefits of staying in 1-AA where it appears they can compete for a National Title year in and year out.

Calm down.

Just enjoy the upset. But there is no way Appalachian State could consistently compete on the D1 level.

I think the administration of the school probably wouldn't want that pressure either.

Easier said than done. Granted there win yesterday was the greatest in history, but they would need to spend money on a upgrading their stadium, facilities, give more money to the athletic budget etc. Also getting in to a conference, is not easy and for revenue sakes it is better to be in a conference than be an independent, unless your Notre Dame and you have clause to play in BCS game no matter what. Still if they want to make that giant leap their win yestarday was a huge first step to do so.

I don't believe that they have any plans to. Besides, success at one level does not guarantee success at another, and we have enough examples in Division I-A of teams moving up that shouldn't have (the entire Sun Belt Conference, good portions of the WAC and MAC).

Besides, Penn State should know about that, since they're playing half of those teams this year.

UCF did it also. They have had success at the I-A level (App. St.) and this big win could atrract some recruiting attention for them. I wouldn't be surprised if they announced going I-A in 3-5 years. Prediction for this weekend Penn State 35 Notre Dame 10. WE ARE........

Congrats to App, for beating a severely overrated football team. They did exactly what I've been saying to friends to beat Michigan. Go up the middle. As far as 1-A they aren't ready.

And again congrats to the Mountaineers.
