Yes, something similar has happened to me a couple of times. I was in my teens once spending the night at a friend's house when I looked out their big front window in the middle of the night and saw a man dressed all in white in front of the bushes across the street. He didn't have a top hat on but it was kind of similar to that, but not so high up and the rim was much bigger. When he looked at me I actually saw a pair of red eyes, totally scared the crap out of me. I do not sleep walk and I was completly awake.
Also my friend's uncle (also in my teens) was into some bad stuff and was running from someone (I think it was the cops) and he said that he ran down an alley and saw the same thing...but only this guy was all in black. This "person" pointed somewhere and the uncle hid there and sure enough, he wasn't caught. I don't know if his was really true but he would have no reason to make things up...especially to me.
I do remember telling someone about it and they said that it was there to either warn us or help us...can't remember. Hope this puts your mind at ease, meaning that you're not alone. =)

As you fall asleep your conscious mind begins to shut down leaving only you subconscious in charge. When you suddenly awake your conscious mind may not fully come to right away leaving you subconscious to relay the world around you. This part of you brain is much better at picking up on subtle things. So you might have an easier time seeing spirits and the like. I have no don't it was a spirit. If you where fully awake you probably would not have even seen it. Don't worry either they can't hurt you or do anything bad. If it makes you uncomfortable just ask it to please not make itself visible. Spirits will still be around because there everywhere. It will just be less disruptive.

This kind of thing happens a lot. It's no coincidence that it always happens as someone is either falling asleep or else just waking up. As you can see by some of the pretty strange dreams you have undoubtedly experienced, the brain is capable of coming up with some pretty strange stuff. This was nothing but a dream that you experienced. Beware of some of the magical thinkers out there who would tell you otherwise.
Or, it could have been Baron Samedi or Fred Astaire.

As you drift off to sleep your pineal gland begins to procude a chemical called DMT which is a hallucinogen and the likely cause of dreams.
It's more likely that this was the cause of your vision.
You can rest assured in your bed that it was not a malevolent presence.
Remember one thing - it's rude for a man to wear a hat inside, and a man in a top hat would know this. Therefore no indoor ghost would be caught dead wearing one.
Pardon the pun.

First of all if you are looking for truth, you don't need other people's opinions or guesses.
Second, when others say it always seems to be when you are in your bed that things paranormal happen, You have to take into consideration that we all sleep 1/3 of our waking hours so that also is a factor. If it never happens outside of being in bed that is one thing, but if there is something for real, there should be some kind of strange thing happening at other times.
We are extremely suseptable to suggestion and movies, even a subliminal message we picked up during the day and at the time you are done with your day, your mind sorts out all of the messages and things your mind came across from the day.
I had the same thing happening to me and was assuming it was nothing because it only happened in the bedroom at night. But it was every night and soon I noticed even stranger things out in the living room.
This is your key to truth. No one can tell you one way or another, according to their belief system, they are just looking for you to join their beliefs, so be open to accept either answer to ghost or no ghost.
If your man starts to show out in the kitchen or tv room, then you may want to get it investigated. If it is only when you are sleepy, then you are probably just not quite asleep or awake.
Try taking a nap during the day and then going into your room and get in bed when you are not sleepy at all, with no chance of going to sleep and recreate the same room as when it happened.
Be as scientific as you can, but that doesn't mean yuo have to have pre ordered conclusions.

You could have been dreaming. Has anything like this ever occured to you before? Are you living in a new house or an older one? Check out the history of the area around where you live, and do some research on it. I wouldn't sleep there for a bit.

No, it wasn't a ghost. It was just your mind playing tricks on you since you were half asleep at that point. A dream, or hallucination, somewhere between being asleep and awake. Similar things happen to everyone at some point.

People report this same thing happening to them just as you have all the time. It could be a spirit, a ghost,a haunting or a waking dream. I would need more information in order to make a determination. But I would not just assume it to be some type of haunting without doing some investigation first.

The vast majority of ghosts reported here happen to appear when the person was going to sleep, sleeping, or waking up from sleep. There is a very good reason for that -- they are simply dreams.
These dreams are especially vivid when on the edge of sleep, since they are very fresh in your mind as they startle you back to consciousness.
All you had was a dream, so relax. :)

Yes it was and it clearly was presenting itself to you. Keep in mind that they have a limited amount of energy, hence the small pocket of time you can see them in, so in essence that ghost is of good intentions and in no way meant to scare you, because if it wanted to, it could have in many different ways, trust me on this!
