I definitely let the cleaning slide when my kids are home. As Phyllis Diller said, "Cleaning your house while your kids are still growing is like shoveling the sidewalk before it stops snowing." Have fun with the kids. I doubt anyone has lain on their deathbed wishing they would have had a cleaner house! :)

Yeah... I let the cleaning slide a bit because I would rather spend more time with my kids. But I also have them help with the cleaning up...
Here's a question that will solve your guilt feelings of not cleaning while the kids are there...
Think about you on your death bed. No kidding. You're dying. Your loved ones are all around your death bed... So, what are you gonna say to them:
a) I wish I had spent more time cleaning the house.
b) I'm glad I spent as much time with you as I did...
Relax... your house will get clean again...

Well since my kids are 2 and 3 years old, they are always home. And my house in constantly spotless. Makes for a very busy day though with 2 toddlers. But I have mild Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. My house HAS to be clean and in order at all times.

What you should do is get the kids involved with the cleaning & tidying for say 20-30mins. Many Hands make light work. Also kids should not be waited on hand and foot.

No honey. My house is spotless. Only my wife has authority to mess it and I don't clean her mess. Well, not too much of it. Like I won't clean something if she's unreasonable.... As for the kid, she's well disciplined and doesn't make a mess. She's a wonderful kid. But then I'm vastly read and know the arts of Neuro Linguistic Programming, hypnosis, mind-control and many many of the world's greatest books and much of it's classical litterature.

yes. I try doing the cleaning when they are in school that
way I can enjoy the clean house for a few hours before they
actually come home and whirlwind things back out of place
or dirty up.

It happens. I sometimes do that too.
My kids are still young, so I work at the things they can't get into (dishes, laundry etc) so that when those things are done, they are DONE.
The other stuff like toys, DVD's I get them to tidy a bit before a bedtime movie, and I do the rest while they sleep.
It doesn't always work though...sometimes I'm ARRRRRGGGGHHHH too, lol.

Nothing in the way of children. next door a woman with a couple of boys. I live in a spare cars and when they get dirty i just move on. A little bottle of nip, couple decks of fresh cards, toothbrush, my stash, etc. in the zip-bag and, of course the guitar. don't eat much. i keep my load light and continue down the fascinating highway of life. smells like a horse stable around here somewhere.
