I'll be getting a laptop soon. I want to be able to use my regular pc in one room while someone else uses the wireless laptop in another room. I have a cable modem. How will I connect things so I can do the above? I do have an older Wireless B router if that will be of any help. Thanks

First hook up the wireless router to your cable modem. (into the internet jack on the router)

then plug the pc into the router using an ethernet cable. (in any regular port, should be 4 there, so choose one!)

lastly, connect to the router wirelessly using the laptop. (make sure it has a wireless card).

Cant help you with the router setup because i do not know what brand it is.

ALSO, wireless b is fine for just sharing internet, you do not need to upgrade your router to G or N unless you require networking capabilites between the 2 computers...or greater range, but they will cost you...i would stick with the wireless b.

You'll need a wireless (output) router to connect your computer to using a hardwired connection then setup a wireless network for the laptop. For that you will need Wi-Fi 802.11 wireless receiver/transmitter which should come with the router. The software included with the router should have you up and running in no time. A good router will probably cost between $100 - 200.

The first guy (Anon Helper) is correct- even a wireless B router is much faster than most broadband internet connections, so you don't need a G or N router, unless you're having problems with signal strength, range or want better wireless security.

Typical cable/DSL connection speeds are between 768k-3 mb, most often 1.5mb. The wireless B router has an 11mb limit, roughly 10 times that...

You will need to buy a more modern router, you would get better use from a wireless N, or G router
