I have a family member who is graduating from college, and I was wondering what an appropriate graduation gift would be. I think gifts are generally given upon graduating, but I am not sure. What are some good gift ideas?

It's usually tradition to give money. Large amount or small, it adds up really fast when everyone gives some. The purpose of giving money is to allow the person to begin a new chapter of their lives with less of a financial burden. Some people have loans to finish paying, others want to move into their own place, or buy a new car. By giving money, you enable them to do any of these things. Don't worry about the amount. Depending on how close you are to the person and how much you can afford, gift amounts range from about $50 up. If you don't quite feel comfortable giving money, give them a gift card to some sort of department store or electronics store.

What was thier major? It may be nice to get then a gift associated with their majo. For instance When I graduate next year with my degree in early childhood education I waould love a gift card to a bookstore like Barnes and Noble so I could get books for my classroom.
Are they moving out of the dorm and on thier own? A gift card to Pier One might be nice.
An money is good too.

Yeah after graduating from college, alot of people do get gifts. Depending on who it is and what/where they are going into depends too. I'd say if it was a girl, maybe a nice necklace with a Class of 07 (or 08 whatever year) to remember it by. Or if it was a guy, maybe one of those nice heavy pens that have like wood on them, and have it engraved? Or maybe a nice Inspirational poster like those Achieve, Lead ones or something nice to put on their desk. Or, if they are moving somewhere, maybe some housegoods or a gift certificate

Gifts are usually given. A good gift might be a tie, briefcase or a laptop, depending on how much you want to spend, and what the person will be doing next.
