I'm very new to charting- am probably going to start next month.
I know that the cycle day that a woman ovulates is different for each woman, but I was wondering if ovulation days tend to be regular the same way that periods can be regular for a woman? For instance, if you find that you ovulate on day 16, do you always ovulate on day 16? Or does it always vary each month? And if it varies, how much? Is it usually within a 3 day time period, a 5 day time period, a 7 day time period?

And also, does having a regular menstrual cycle tend to give a person a more predictable (regular) ovulation day as well or no?

*I don't think I worded my questions very well, but hopefully everyone will understand what I'm asking* =)

Thanks in advance!

What stays the same is your luteal phase. So if your luteal phase length is 12 days like me, you know that after you ovulate your period will be due 12 days past ovulation. The way I knew I was pregnant 2 months ago was when 13 days past ovulation my temp was still high in the morning, and sure enough I had no period. A luteal phase is usually 12-16 days in general but you'll know the length of your after the first month of charting. You can ovulate at anytime, but if you chart you'll always know exactly when your period is due which is great for those with irregular periods. No more guessing game. You'll know for sure when you late.

The best answer to your question is IT DEPENDS on the particular woman.

True, those with more predictable period dates also have more predictable ovulation dates. Most women with NORMAL cycle variation only vary by fewer than 5 days. Women with wildly fluctuating cycles can vary by more or sometimes not ovulate for months.

However, this might all be a moot point. For a useful summary of the big picture regarding ovulation monitoring, feel free to check out this article...
