This will sound kind of silly, but here goes:
You see, my grandmother and I are always arguing about grammar and word definitions. One day we were talking about some store and didn't get a lot of business and she says, "We should go and patronize them."
I said, "What? That doesn't sound right. 'Patronize' means to look down upon."
And she tells me, "Patronize means to do business with."
"No it doesn't."
"When we get home, go look it up, and I bet I'm right."
I told her if she wanted to bet on it, and in the end we agreed a dollar was worth one word. I looked it up at home, and it turned out we were both right. PatronizING means to belittle, to look down upon. Patronize means to do business with. Neither one of us got the dollar, but it was fun anyway.
