where can I find a low cost metal detector....can be used?

I don't know what you call low cost. But I bought one at radio shack for 70 dollars , and it works great. They also sell them at toys R us, but I don't know how good they are.

Harbor Freight tools sells them as a tool to find nails and screws in lumber.

You can rent them sometimes, I know my work does. Only useful if you just need it for a short period of time, but a lot cheaper.
