Someone really lonely and full of disappointments. He wants to be good, (hence the biblical references) but he finds that being alone is better than being surrounded by decietful people. People have let him down so many times that he doesn't trust anyone anymore and even when people are nice to him, he suspects alterier motives. The fact that he smokes means he cares what others think.
Fun no?

I am alone but not because I want to be. I put my heart, my trust and faith in someone else's hands and found disappointment. The smoke could be from a cigarette or the fact that deceit was once hidden and now I hide behind that same smoke. Biblical reference means all is not lost because I am still a spiritual being.

This poem is really cleverly constructed and it builds a strong character.
The poet feels an obligation to live in life with friends/bonds. So he/she searches the world for friends, and is utterly dissapointed time and time again. Thus, he/she confides in material and abstract objects for human support (cigarettes, night, skies, stars, and Biblical figures). Since these do not fulfill her, he/she lives a lonely life, believing he/she has enough with never enough, and living a lie.

Alienation, hurt and depression. It reminds me of this:
A winters day
In a deep and dark december;
I am alone,
Gazing from my window to the streets below
On a freshly fallen silent shroud of snow.
I am a rock,
I am an island.
Ive built walls,
A fortress deep and mighty,
That none may penetrate.
I have no need of friendship; friendship causes pain.
Its laughter and its loving I disdain.
I am a rock,
I am an island.
Dont talk of love,
But Ive heard the words before;
Its sleeping in my memory.
I wont disturb the slumber of feelings that have died.
If I never loved I never would have cried.
I am a rock,
I am an island.
I have my books
And my poetry to protect me;
I am shielded in my armor,
Hiding in my room, safe within my womb.
I touch no one and no one touches me.
I am a rock,
I am an island.
And a rock feels no pain;
And an island never cries."
I hope the author manages to overcome his/her feelings and comes to see that he/she is a part of everything that he/she loves and hates.

This poem is really deep.
A man feels lonely
he is hiding something
He lost his friends, his family
They used him and acted as if he was their friend. They were never honest with him. They never said what they thought and hid feelings deep inside.

the speaker expresses disgust at "you" and "your lies" for condemning his/her smoking. In spite of everything, and all hypocrisy, he/she is also a child of God, of - Jesus, Mary and Joesph - watched over by the angels. Quite an honest comment about those who see specks in other peoples' eyes for their own selfish delight!
