Cosmic joke is a term sometimes found in the conversations when discussing great moments of being well and truly stumped in figuring out problems in the sciences, and even daily existence itself.

I heard it in conventions when speakers want to make it a point to remind everybody that nothing comes easy, or that the profound answers of discoveries can be almost labeled as a great joke.

Here is such a definition from Dr Lipton
"There is a "thing" I refer to as Universe Humor, others may refer to it as a Cosmic Joke. There have been times in all of our lives when we thought we knew exactly how some event or incident was going to turn out. We could be so convinced that we "knew" what was going to happen, that we would have bet the family farm and the kitchen sink on the outcome of the event. It is at moments like this, when the Universe surprises us by taking a left turn instead of a right."

the "cosmic joke", or -to put it a bit more respectfully- the "universal paradox". In plain English: it is the difference between what is possible in principle, and what is possible in your world.

We are all agreed that your theory is crazy. The question which divides us is whether it is crazy enough to have a chance of being correct. My own feeling is that it is not crazy enough. Niels Bohr Everything we call real is made of things that cannot be regarded as real. Niels Bohr The strangeness of this place we are in is that what we call reality is a facade. It is nothing more than energy taking forms. What we think of as imaginary (thought) is the only reality. You think this is a cosmic joke, or perhaps you think it is a cosmic accident. What it actually is, is a learning laboratory for beings of thought. We are here to learn. Evidently our knowing what we are here to learn will impair our ability to learn the lessons.
