Sooner or later it pays off. If you believe in yourself and believe in the idea, get involved in planning the details, implementing the idea, helping the idea work for the entire company, etc. You may get nothing. Most times, you get nothing.
You will always get the opportunity to add it on your yearly review. You will always get to learn from it. If it don't make the grade for implementation learn why.
Research "Process Improvement", Quality or Six Sigma.
Solving problems and improving how things work is very rewarding in itself.

Some companies will give you money if you suggest a money saving idea. I hope you had a great suggestion and that they pay you for it :-)

Really depends on the company.
