I noticed colored s/f for sale. They are not spray painted. Are they watered with colored water or possibly cut then placed in colored H20 to absorb the color? When placed in a vase of water the water turned color. They are red and orange. Anyone know how to achive this? Thanks.

Thanks for the question.............
Imagine my dismay when I found out they do come in colors Not just yellow!
I've included the links incase you want to find the seeds.
Good Luck!

Autumn Mix: The colors are yellow and rust; they grow tall, usually over 6 foot. We grew them in a very small corner off our porch and were able to use twine and tie them for support. The gold finches loved this variety. The flower heads are about 5 or 6 inches wide.

*Italian White: These cream colored sunflowers are small, but cheerful. They grow up to 4 foot tall, but stake easily. The gold finches also loved this variety. These too are great for a small corner of your yard or garden.

Sunflowers are easy to grow, and there are so many wonderful new varieties available that there’s sure to be at least one for you.
Imagine petals cultivated in shades of cream, persimmon or apricot, with centers the color of dark chocolate, lime sorbet or cornbread.

I love sunflowers. There are many varieties. I do not grow the large sunflowers because they look gangly and half dead most of the time and reach heights of 8 feet. By your fence, you would want a smaller sunflower that has branching heads. Just look at the descriptions on the seed packets or in the catalogs. I find that the squirrels are more of a pest than the insects. When the sunflower heads begin to ripen, the squirrels will attack the heads, gnaw on them, even chew them off and take them away. Some sunflowers also leak oil from the seeds which seems to "poison" the ground underneath them. I dont think poison is a good word but undergrowth is discouraged by this oil. I love sunflowers, plant them every year and dont care much about the squirrel damage because they dont bother the flowers. I plant what are called "oilers." If the squirrels dont get the heads, I dry the heads and have birdseed for the winter for my permanent bird residents.

While some flowers such as carnations and dasies are placed in colord water, I do not believe that this is the case with sunflowers. Hang on, here:

Traditionally, the blossoms have large dark centers surrounded by brilliant yellow petals. Hybridization has produced many different colors of sunflowers from a lime color ranging through to a deep maroon.

There are many assorted seed packets of sun flowers. They go from gold through shades of yellows to a dark Burgundy red. Chianti is the name of the dark color.

I do not know where you live but (in the south) Burpee Seeds has racks in Kmart now, Home Depot will have them in December, Targets in January and Walmart about the same time.

They (Burpee Garden Products) do package a huge assortment of seeds, Sunflowers especially.

Sunflowers come in every shade of yellow, orange, red and brown and are seldom colored. White daisy's are commonly colored with dye in the water. RScott
