Get yourself "CrapCleaner" - just type it into your address bar - it's free, and when you've used it you'll find three quarters of your computer will be available for use again ! ! !

As everyone else has suggested, try to burn things off to CDs, music, pictures etc. It may take longer as fragmentation increases time taken for CD burning, virus scans etc. Delete the temporary files (run diskcleanup) and empty recycle bin.
Always be regular with this and dont wait until the system gets too slow or drive runs out of space since when fragmentation reaches third degree and there is also no free space, troubleshooting is like an emergency operation.

If u can't burn the files to CD then maybe compress them (this may or may not work, it depends on the files being compressed). If you move the contents of your My docs folder into say a Max compressed zip file then delete the originals this might get you enough space.

Unfortunately if all else fails then ur going to have to decide which Application/Game you can do without till u've done your defrag. Pick one and uninstall it.

I am in agreement with your first poster here --
You need to eliminate some stuff from the hard drive and the best way to do that (if you actually have to have all this stuff you have on your system) is to transfer some of it to discs or an external drive !!
You have to be able to do defrag operations -- otherwise your space problem will only be a beginning to many other system snaffu's !!

run the "disc cleanup" program. if you are on xp, it will be in the same place as you found the defrag program in the control panel. it is also under system tools, which is under accessories in the start menu.

if this doesnt work, you probably have too much stuff on your computer. try deleting stuff you dont need.

You didnt state how many GB your hard drive is. Windows XP need at least 3GB for its own files. I would suggest either to reformat the drive and install windows or buy a larger hard drive and will then solve your disk space problem
