Do you? I've found that reading is the ultimate in escaping this petty, bickering society. I don't even like it, when I read about divorce or cheating in any of my books. Then again, all I read is horror and sci-fi stuff. But anyway, do you read to escape the crappy reality of life and society?

ABSOLUTELY.
Sometimes, though, I feel like I'm looking for something when I read. I don't know what it is. People in general are just really screwed up and sometimes I read so I can remember that not everything sucks, and that there's good people out there.

God, that was really emo. Sorry, I'm tired.

Gosh, that's an interesting question. Yes, I do that.

But I also read to escape TO reality as well... an example of what I am talking about.... a free on line book... "Gospel Enigma." Find it at New Free Books.

God I hope not. I'm currently reading American Psycho for my dissertation. If you think our society's bad, perhaps a read of that little gem will give you a bit of perspective. I just read the chapter where he's murdered someone with an axe and put the body in a taxi, in a sleeping bag - and no one asked any questions. Sheesh!

I read to partly escape, also, to feel, to empathise with the charecters, I don't particularly like it when things get depressing in a book,( I refuse to read those real life, "my terrible childhood" books.) But if it's useful to the plot for things to get down before it picks up again, than that's all good. all in all though, yes, I do read to escape reality.

Yes, sometimes. Reading calms me at times, and makes me happier. There's nothing like a good old English poem, or Dickens chapter. :-) And the Bible is the ultimate read.

Yes, most of the time. Think I read just to keep my mind busy so I won't have to think about things in reality. I will read just about anything, anywhere & at any time.

Reading is a contract between writer and reader and the readers part is to suspend disbelief if they are to enjoy the book.

To escape yes, but also to see it from a different perspective.
