I write an extremely long article about getting cheap airfare on my blog. It is way too long to write in this space.
As for where to go in October, the farther south the better (obviously). Spain might be an option (although it can get a little cold around this time). How about Greece? or Cyprus.
It is hard to tell because I am not sure exactly what you like. I didnt like Greece but I am not a beach person. If you are into beaches go to Cyprus or Malta. Malta is really hot all year round. I am not sure about prices. If you like cheap places Bosnia, Serbia and the other former Yugoslovian Countries are also nice. Maybe you can go to Montenegro. Or maybe you are looking for somewhere out of europe?
Anyways the article I wrote about cheap airfare is here:

general tips for backpacking through europe can be found here:

I hope I helped

Visit an independent travel agent and they will put you together a great package, if they are independent they will offers from all different companies and not push you to one or another. As you do not say what age or sex you are or what you are looking for other then heat I suggest the further south you go the better, the Canary Islands are great and there are often good deals. Weather being what it is there is no longer a guarantee that the South of Spain, Andalucia for example which usually has great weather in October will not have rain for the week you are there.

The Canary Islands are known if you are the sun centre of Europe! See this sunlight with hotelbye . Canary Islands provide a slight conditions and a variety of remarkable natural attractions. Five of its seven islands have been reported a Biosphere Reserve, and the archipelago has four national parks. Probably the most excellent attractions in Canary Islands will be the beaches since they're only perfect for comforting in the sun or enjoying water activities such as for example windsurfing and scuba diving. In Canary Islands you will also be impressing by the inner appeal like: hiking, pattern touring, hiking and also caving. Some of the very spectacular attractions of Canary Islands are: the volcanic landscape of Lanzarote, the beaches of Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria making use of their mud dunes, or the natural forests of La Palma and La Gomera.
