The key is to structure your existence so that you don't owe anything to anyone so that you don't have to work. Or at least, you have to work less, and at a job that you enjoy...that way it won't be a rat race and it just be doing what you like and getting some money for it. This may mean you can't live in an apartment, and probably means you need to get land or a house outside of the city and suburbs where its cheaper to live.

Working out of the house in some capacity is ideal too.

Check out Mother Earth News - its a magazine that is all about this kind of thing.

I gave up on W-2 type employment and started a service business. And the reason was mostly that I got tired of being in a position where someone could just cut my livelihood out from under me. And I wasn't such a bad employee; but it happened to me a couple of times and I watched it happen to others.
Now no one person can cut me off. (Except one supplier I need pretty badly. Though I'd manage, if necessary)

A soft market can make me suffer, and it has happened. But I'm not at the mercy of any individual and that's a very good thing.

Worked in Lonodn as language tutor in Uni for 6 years. Wasn't earning enough to have a decent life so I resigned and moved to bonnie Scotland. Became a council tenant, but couldn't find another job up here so am still struggling just like before.

After 20 years in London with a high stress job I moved to the South of France where the weather is great, the food delicious and the only stress I have is which beach to go to on a Sunday!!
I love it and don't regret my decision for one second!!

I emigrated to my wife's homeland(Réunion Island) Indian Ocean. the pace of life is slower. The weather is better. the people are beautiful etc. That said, the traffic jams are horrendous, and the cost of living is, in general, more expensive. Finally, you can take the man out of England, but you can't take England out of the man!

Yes. But it is just a change of environment which is needed by human being. To look for greener pasture is another point. Mankind is bound to look for an environment where he feel much comfortable in life.
