I am interested in purchasing an Acer 22" widescreen LCD monitor, however it says that the resolution is 1680x1050. My video card only goes up to 1600x1200. Will this monitor work ok for me?

No, I tried that. It will not go any higher than 1600x1200.

First make sure you have the latest drivers so that you have widescreen support, if available.

Next open up Display Properties, but instead of altering the resolution click on the Advanced button. Click on the Monitor Tab and clear the "Hide modes that this monitor cannot display" tick box. Click Apply. Then click the Adapter tab and the "List All Modes" button. Now see if 1680 by 1050 is available.

Do not select a new mode, as if you select one beyond the capability of your current monitor you can end up with a blank screen.

So click Cancel and then re-check the tick box under the Monitor tab.

If your system does not support 1680 by 1050 then the monitor will work at lower resolutions. But because it needs to scale up the image to the 1680 by 1050 pixels in the LCD panel the image will not be as crisp and clear as it could be.

okay, here's the run down on your set-up.

Your 1600x1200 (UXGA) video card is a 4:3 aspect ratio, while the 1680x1050 (WSXGA+) Acer LCD is a 16:10 aspect ratio. Either look for a monitor that does UXGA, or replace your graphics card with one that does WSXGA+ .. or (I don't know if this is possible) check you available video card resolutions for one that is 16:10. Under no circumstances will your graphics card deliver any resolution better than UXGA. Personally, I would say that the monitor will work with a video card upgrade .. thats what I would do. It is so worth it. I just bought and highly recommend:

Hyvision by Megavision MV220 22" Widescreen LCD Monitor - 5ms, 1000:1, WSXGA+ 1680 x 1050, DVI, VGA, Component Video, Black, Integrated Speakers

$220 after rebate and everything has been working perfect right out of the box.

I bring HD 720p (1280x720 resolution) into it via component, and DVI from the computer at 1680x1050. I never knew that TV or computer could look so good!

No, here's how to change it- Right click on the desktop, click properties. Go on the settings tab, click on the screen resolution you want in the scroll bar.
