Fairy or Faerie - a super-natural being, fond of pranks, but generally pleasing. Of nursery mythology they are the personification of Providence. The good ones are called fairies, elves, elle-folks, and fays; the evil ones are urchins, ouphes, ell-maids, and ell-women. Alternate spellings include: Faerie, Fai, Faierie, Faiery, Fair, Fairye, Farie, Fary, Fay, Fayerie, Fayery, Fayry, Fee, Feiri, Fery, Fey, Feyrie, Feyrye, Phairie, Pharie, Pherie (from the Latin: Fata "Fates").
Pixy or Pixie - a Devonshire fairy, same as Puck. Pixies have been described as "small mischeivious beings without wings. They hop! They have spingy feet and long legs."

Pixies are sometimes referred to as either piskies/piskeys or the little people.
Fairies are also known as wee folk, good folk, or people of peace.
Both of these creatures are generally known as sprites. (not to mention other magical / supernatural creatures such as gnomes, elves etc, so it can't really be considered an alternative name for fairies and pixies)

I'm pretty sure it's a changeling. Supposedly, my family's line began with one about 400 years ago.

in Ireland, folks never called them fairies, they called them "the little people". They were orignally the people of the Tua de Dannon, the first people who the Celts killed off. Only, they didn't kill them, the Dannon disappeared during battle. They went into the hill. And so because the Celts never officially won the battle, they could never rightfully take ownership of Ireland. They were haunted by the fact that they were settling on soil that wasn't rightfully theirs. They beleived that the Dannon were haunting them, playing tricks on them, mischiviously causing all kinds of problems for households like switching their newborns for their own Dannon babes, making their cows go dry, causing storms that wreck ships just within a hundred feet off shore, and causing all kinds of bad luck. They were called the little people and greatly feared and were taught never to forget them, to always pay them the respect they deserve as the true people of Ireland. Of course, over the centuries the mysterious people became smaller and smaller, because they'd been forgotten.
